Are vitamins dangerous?

Moving through my daily news reads of the industry I have found more and more articles on a study released about the risks of vitamins. Simply put the news said the majority of women who took these vitamins or minerals had a higher risk of dying. Calcium was the only one that didn't. So I'm going to get on my soap box for a minute.

There are some good explainations for this. One is that these individuals may have been taking vitamins due to known illness. for example, cancer patients take specific medication in an attempt to alleviate their illness. Saying "Older Women who take cancer medication are at a higher risk of dying" is true, but it maybe due to a third party, which is cancer.

The news does a very poor job of translating scientific research properly. This is why our profits have been dedicated to medical research, we want to actually have rigorous studies in place. This is often difficult and when we are doing research for products there are a ton of different items of scientific study that appear to have all sorts of methodological issues or do not demonstrate a threshold for dose effect, the minimum amount needed to see an intervention.

Could vitamins cause this? Yes. Could something else be causing this? Yes. Due to the correlational status we don't know the actual cause which is vital to making the best decision.

I'm done with my little soap box now. Here is a prime example of a poorly written article that doesn't explain the science behind it very well. Sorry Alaska news, you just happened to be the one I picked out.

Early signs of alzheimer

Thanks to WebMD for this article. While these may appear obvious people often tend to ignore symptoms until its largely late in the game. If you are concerned, seek medical help but just remember everyone has these things occur once in a while.

Study on Calcium and other vitamins

Looks like there is another study out there telling another story about vitamins, multivitamins and a wide range of other issues. Remember to take it with a 'just is just one piece of the jig saw puzzle' kind of mentality. Anyone who has lived long enough knows that studies will show that eating bacon helps and then eating bacon doesn't. Philip Wilson does a good job of staying neutral and trying to find all the facts. Hopefully you guys won't get lost in the details of this new study, just interesting calcium study here.

What can help with jet lag?

Natalie Marx delivers an interesting post about how to stop jet lag and a few other symptoms using alternative medicine. Anyone have positive effects from this kind of treatment on jet lag?

Did you know anti-energy drinks have some curious ingredients?

Anti-energy drinks are filled with a variety of different ingredients. One even has THC, the major chemical compound in weed. The majority of these products lack proper scientific backing to really speak strongly towards its own brand not to mention the potential long term damager that can occur on organs.

While Energy Supplements receive a counter-culture change, it still doesn't seem that many of either kind is good for the body.

Inositol is as good as pharma grade drug

Inositol in a clinical study was compared to an antidepressant known as fluvoxamine. The main treatment was for panic disorders. This was a stringent test of the effects of inositol. On the scales inositol tested slightly better than the pharma grade drug but was otherwise compariable on all other measures like phobia, clinical globa impression scale and the HAS. No changest to liver and kidneys were observed in the clinical trial and inositol maybe a healthy alternative to individuals receiving side effects from this pharma-drug.

Important vitamins for aging women

Dr. Cheryl Karcher, a dermatologist and consultant for Avon had a great conversation by New York times. She says that "As a woman ages, it is important to do exercises to strengthen muscles and bones. Taking calcium, magnesium and getting enough vitamin D is crucial. Also, the B vitamins — especially folic acid. The omega fatty acids are important too. I take a supplement called ‘Simply One Women,” which is excellent. It has everything. Eat lots of berries, especially blackberries because they have more fiber. Drinking green tea and eating raw almonds and salmon can never hurt."

On top of a crafted amount of energy vitamins Sera also has calcium, vitamin d, magnesium and folic acid.
